Commodore 64 Ultimate Returns: A Retro Legend, Not a 3D-Printed One

3 min read

Commodore.net has officially relaunched its legendary home computer as the Commodore 64 Ultimate, rebuilding the classic machine on modern FPGA hardware. We cover it here as a curiosity: it has no direct 3D printing angle, since the case is produced with classic injection molding using the original 1986 tooling, not 3D printing.

The Commodore.net 64 Ultimate, presented on Commodore's official site, is a modern rebuild of one of the best-known home computers ever made. It is not a software emulator: it reproduces the original Commodore 64 hardware down to chip level on an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA, while adding modern connectivity such as HDMI, USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

According to the manufacturer, the machine is over 99.9% compatible with original software and peripherals, including monitors, disk drives and cartridges. This is the manufacturer's own claim, and the source page does not cite an independent test confirming it.

Why cover this on a 3D printing site?

At first glance the topic sits far from 3D printing, and it is worth stating clearly: the Commodore 64 Ultimate's case is not 3D printed. The slimmer C64C version is molded from the original 1986 injection tooling, which the manufacturer says it reacquired after forty years. Commodore states that this tooling leaves a period-correct flow pattern on the new cases — again, this is the manufacturer's own marketing claim, not an independently verified test result.

That said, the retro-computing and maker communities have long had close ties to 3D printing: case mods, custom accessories and replacement parts for machines like this are frequently produced as 3D printed add-ons. In that sense, this story is background interest for that audience rather than a direct 3D printing development.

Key specifications

  • Memory: 128MB DDR2 RAM, partitioned across system, REU and GeoRAM
  • Video output: HDMI 1080p (50/60Hz) plus an analog 8-pin DIN output
  • Audio: 2 physical SID sockets plus 8 emulated SID channels in the FPGA
  • Keyboard: 66-key mechanical layout with a transparent, N-key rollover PCB
  • File system support: FAT/FAT32/exFAT alongside classic C64 formats (.D64, .T64, .PRG and more)

The manufacturer describes the original Commodore 64 as the best-selling desktop computer of all time, a claim independently confirmed by Guinness World Records' own listing, so this specific point is not merely a marketing statement.

Pre-orders for the Commodore 64 Ultimate start at $299.99, with the manufacturer stating that shipments go out in stages from hubs in the USA, UK, EU and APAC.
