Unlayered 3D: A Desktop Five-Axis Printer and Non-Planar Slicing

Introduction: US startup Unlayered 3D is presenting a five-axis desktop 3D printer alongside purpose-built slicing software. The approach allows the nozzle orientation and toolpath to change beyond conventional flat-layer printing, potentially enabling some complex geometries to be produced with less support material—or without supports.

Why five-axis motion matters

Conventional FDM printers typically build objects by stacking planar layers. Overhangs and surfaces that curve in several directions may require support structures, which consume material and must be removed after printing. Contact points can also leave marks on the finished part.

Unlayered's five-axis system can change the nozzle's orientation, allowing the toolpath to follow part geometry more closely. The company's demonstrations include examples such as an intake manifold, a propeller and flexible components, where multi-axis path planning may offer practical advantages.

The software is as important as the hardware

The company is also developing Unlayered Slicer. According to its website, the OrcaSlicer-based application brings non-planar and five-axis slicing into the workflow. This is a critical part of the system: a multi-axis printer needs software that can generate feasible toolpaths while accounting for geometry and potential collisions, without requiring users to manually solve every motion-planning problem.

Promising technology, with specifications still to verify

The company's website invites enquiries about pilot units. Based on the public material reviewed, final mass-production specifications, pricing and broad availability should not yet be treated as confirmed. Support-free printing depends on the part geometry, material, toolpath and process settings, so the claim cannot be generalized to every model.

Unlayered 3D is worth watching because it aims to make multi-axis additive manufacturing more accessible through desktop-scale hardware and dedicated slicing software. Its practical value will depend on reliability, build volume, material compatibility, software maturity and price.
